A flagship-scale freshwater broodstock hatchery in the North West Highlands, delivered for a major Scottish salmon producer. Brian Stevenson Ltd held the Site Manager role on-site throughout, reporting directly to the client’s project engineering lead, and carried overall responsibility for programme, safety and multi-trade coordination across carpentry, general labour, civils and specialist subcontractors — while delivering the core technical scope in-house: installation and control wiring of the fish life-support systems (intake pumps, chillers, dosing pumps, oxygenation).

Team & contractor management

  • Direct workforce Carpentry, trade assistance, general labour and earthworks crews deployed and scaled in line with programme need, avoiding a fixed, permanently inflated site team.
  • Specialist subcontractor coordination Day-to-day sequencing of the civils contractor, the bulk oxygen storage and supply specialist, painting contractors, and manufacturer commissioning engineers on the glycol coolant loop regulating water temperature across tanks and silos — all sharing the same live, biosecure site.
  • Plant room commissioning liaison Ongoing coordination with the specialist process commissioning engineers responsible for the plant room, across intake, egg incubation and quarantine systems.
  • Silo construction oversight Direct oversight of the construction and installation of approximately 1,800 egg silos across the incubation building.
  • Client IT & health and safety liaison Direct liaison with the client's IT and health and safety departments, with Brian Stevenson Ltd's safety practice adopting the client's own safety culture protocols across the site.
  • Open-book communication Daily site logs and executive summaries issued directly to the engineering lead, with the same standard of same-day transparency extended across every specialist subcontractor on-site.
  • Single point of accountability One contractor holding site-wide safety, scheduling and quality control across every trade on-site, reporting a single, consistent picture back to the client's engineering lead.

Life-support control wiring, fresh water pipework and chiller systems completed to a fixed weekly deadline ahead of each scheduled egg delivery.

Control cabling and pre-wire across 17 systems, including intake, egg incubation, dosing pump and chiller connections.

Standby Power & Generation Management

Servicing and fault resolution across a three-generator standby fleet, coordinated directly with manufacturer commissioning engineers.

A four-day high-voltage outage window held to schedule, with standby generation covering welfare and process loads throughout.

Full paging, auto-dialer and annunciator panel installation across both plant rooms.

Collaboration to deliver

Brian Stevenson Ltd operated an open-book reporting policy throughout the engagement: daily site logs and executive summaries addressed directly to the client’s engineering lead, maintaining a single, consistent line of communication rather than filtered or delayed updates. This discipline extended to every contractor sharing the site — civils, bulk gas supply, process commissioning, manufacturer engineers and painting contractors alike — with issues surfaced and escalated the same day they arose, not held back for a scheduled review. On a project of this scale, that single-point, multi-trade oversight — rather than siloed subcontracting — was what kept two hard deadlines either side of a full HV outage on schedule, and gave the client a verifiable, real-time record of decisions and progress throughout.
